August 3, 2006

TORONTO - A new poll conducted by Compas Research has found that a majority of Canadians believe that Israel is acting reasonably in response to Hezbollah attacks. The poll, conducted between July 27 and August 1, found that 65 percent of respondents believed Israel’s response was either appropriate or too little. These dates bracketed Israel’s attack on a the Lebanese village of Qana where a number of civilians, including women and children, died.

The poll also indicated that Canadians continue to support Stephen Harper’s stand on the fighting in the Middle East, giving him a 60 percent approval rating for his position, including a 51 percent approval rating in the Province of Quebec.

The poll is deemed accurate to within 4.5 percentage points 19 times out of twenty.
